Today, I’d like to talk about the 5 key essentials to include in your summer capsule wardrobes.

Yes, finally, we’re into the first official month of summer. It’s a wonderful time of year – the days are long and warm, strawberries are in season and summer holidays are just around the corner.  Which means that it’s definitely time to start thinking about your summer wardrobe and all those lovely pieces you are going to wear.

So today, I’d like to talk about the 5 key essentials to include in your summer capsule wardrobes.  In my book, these are the items that you don't really get to wear at other times of the year.  So this is the season to make the most of them and wear them every day if you can!  For each category I have included links to my favourite picks.

Before we get into it, Today's Question is: what do you look forward to most about summer. Leave your thoughts in the comments below.

#1. Dresses

Dresses are sooo easy and breezy and absolutely perfect for summer. Slip them on and you have your outfit in one!

  • At this time of year, there are so many to choose from.  That can also make it difficult to pick out the best ones. If you are looking to add one or two new ones to your capsule wardrobe this summer, my top 5 tips are: Opt for neutral colours. This will maximise your cost per wear. You will be absolutely amazed at how many ways you can style, say, a simple black linen dress by changing your shoes, accessorises, bag or adding another layer such as a shawl or jacket.

  • If you prefer patterns, stick to smaller prints, polka dots or stripes. Again, you will be able to wear these multiple times and they will be the easier to style in many different ways.

  • Select classic or simple styles to make sure that you can wear the dress next season as well (and hopefully many seasons after that as well).

  • In hot climates, opt for natural fabrics such as linens and cottons. They may crease but, at the end of the day, that is all part of the 'look' and far better than wearing something which is going to make you sticky and uncomfortable.

At the moment, any length seems to be in vogue – mini, midi or maxi – so take your pick and go with whatever you feel most at ease in.

#2. Sleeveless tops

You will find these to be a real life-saver. They are perfect for work, especially if your workplace remains ambient- (rather than air-) conditioned. Equally, they work well if your work environment is air-conditioned, as you can layer a jacket over the top while at work and slip it off for your commute home.

They are also great to wear casually – especially if you want to protect yourself from the sun while out-of-doors or if you are not sure what the dress code is and want to stay cool without showing too much skin!

#3. Shorts

I know that not everyone likes to wear them but, for me, they are an absolute must in the summertime. When it’s really hot and you are out and about, there is absolutely nothing better to wear.

I would recommend opting for block colours, rather than patterned shorts (although if that is your vibe, go for it!) – either in neutral colours and natural fabrics or bright summer jewel colours such as pinks, blues and greens.

Again, any length seems to be in vogue right now, from short to Bermuda, so take your pick and go with whatever you feel most comforable in.

#4. Sandals

Another win-win, especially when it is hot, sandals are both stylish and practical. They can absolutely complete an outif and are easy to slip on and off as you move in from indoors and outdoors, as well as doing a brilliant job of keeping your feet cool!

Again there are so many styles to choose from but you can never go wrong with a good classic leather pair of sandals. They will wear beautifully and will only get better wtih age.

#5. Hats

Of course, these are incredibly important to wear in the heat to prevent heat stroke and sunburn. Practicalities aside, they can also be the standout piece of your outfit and make your look totally unique from the rest of the crowd.

I would suggest opting either for a classic straw hat or one which you can easily roll up in your suitcase and take on holiday with you. Or, if you love wearing hats, possibly both!

Enjoy the summer!
