Capsule wardrobe: wish list 2019

Writer's picture: RoseRose

Having focused on adding 'basics' to my wardrobe last year, this year I'm going to focus on adding a handful of key, quality items. Today, I am going to share that wish list with you.

Following Christmas, my wardrobe was a mess. I still had summer pieces in it, lots of autumn pieces and sparkly items that I had been wearing over the festive break.  It was time to sort it all out. So I emptied my wardrobe, pulled out the rest of my winter clothing from storage and piled everything onto my bed.

From this pile, I put together my winter capsule wardrobe (using the principles I explain in my new eBook 'Capsule Wardrobe How-To Book'.  You can buy and download a copy here). It is very easy to amass clothes and to hold onto items for years, (even when you are not wearing them anymore). The most time-consuming part is actually getting rid of them. (I say 'getting rid' loosely as I try to do so in a responsible way. I'll do a separate blog post on that at a later date).

Going through this process has really made me think about what I want to add to my wardrobe this year. Last year, I focused on adding the 'basics' – that is to say, the building blocks, which allow you to make outfits easily e.g.

  • black and white short-sleeve T-shirts

  • white jeans

  • black and blue trousers

  • black turtle neck jumper

For a couple of those pieces, I replaced items which I had worn out. But for the remainder, I’m embarrassed to say, I didn’t even have those items in my wardrobe!

Adding these pieces to my wardrobe has made all of the difference. I can now put together outfits easily and rarely do I find myself standing in front of my wardrobe wondering what to wear. So now that I’ve got all of the basics, I would like to focus on adding a few key items to my wardrobe this year. Part of that motivation is that I don’t want to find myself having to do another clear out this time next year. I also know that if spend a bit of time and money buying items that I truly love, I value them all the more and they will be in my wardrobe for years to come. So here is my wish list for 2019:

  1. Black tote bag

  2. White summer dress

  3. Camel crewneck sweater

  4. Black jeans

  5. Winter puffer jacket

  6. Grey knit dress

  7. Black ankle boots

As I purchase each item, I will report back and let you know how I am getting on.

So what is on your wish list this year? If you could only add a maximum of 3 pieces to your wardrobe this year, what would they be?   Let me know in the comments below. I'd love to know.
