How to build a capsule wardrobe ~ Part 2: Planning

Last week, I discussed how to take stock of your existing capsule wardrobe before you change it over for the next season (you can read that blog post here).  And how I put that into practice (see here).  Today, I am going to talk you through the next stage and the steps you need to take to plan your next capsule wardrobe.

Very importantly, before you start to build your next capsule wardrobe, you need a plan. As the famous saying goes, ‘failing to plan is planning to fail’.

So, without further ado, let’s get planning.

Step 1 – Identify the type of capsule wardrobe you are going to create

First of all, you need to identify what kind of capsule wardrobe you are going to create.

Here are some questions to ask:

  1. What is the purpose of your capsule wardrobe? How long will it last for? What is the climate going to be?  (e.g. is it for a season, holiday etc.)

  2. What is your style inspiration for the season ahead? (Read here on how to gather inspiration for your wardrobe.)

  3. What is your colour palette going to be? (Read here on how to choose a colour palette.)

  4. If you were to pick three words, what is the ‘vibe’ of your capsule going to be?

  5. Write down three items you would definitely like to include in your capsule.

Step 2 – Don’t skip this stage!

This is the background, the preparatory work.  If you are anything like me, you probably want to skip over this stage and jump straight into pulling out your clothes for the next season.

However, it is an absolutely crucial step – if you want to build a capsule wardrobe quickly and easily and ensure that it is going to work for you.

After all, these are the clothes which you are going to be wearing for the next 3 months. Yes, THREE whole months!  If you are going to get it ‘right’, you need to invest a good proportion of your time and energy up front.

So take your time and work through each question one by one. You may want to give yourself a week to do this exercise.

In practice

I’m now going to do all of the above in relation to my own wardrobe. So check back mid-week when I will be sharing with you how I got on.

Next week

And next week, I will be talking you through exactly how to go about actually creating your capsule wardrobe.  This will build on all of the preparatory work we have done so far.

So leave me a comment below - is this your first time building a capsule wardrobe or have you used them before?  I'd love to know.
