Today, I am going to show you exactly how I put together my autumn capsule wardrobe.
I've taken stock of summer wardrobe and put that away (you can read all about that here).
And I’ve come up with my plan for my autumn capsule wardrobe (see here).
Now I’m ready to build it! And I’m going to walk you through exactly how I did that.
Step 1 – Gather your clothing items
As I mentioned before, I keep all of my off-season clothing items in Ikea storage boxes under my bed, like this:

So I’m going to get those out and unpack all of my autumn clothes from them.
Step 2 – Create piles on your bed
Next, I’m going to create piles on my bed of like items e.g. a pile for skirts, one for dress, one for jumpers etc.:
Step 3 – Remove items which don’t fit your colour palette
Ordinarily, I would then remove the pieces that do not fit my colour palette.
For example, this is the colour palette I've chosen for this autumn:

My neutral colours are: chambray blue, white, grey, navy blue, beige and black.
My two accent colours are dusky pink and berry red.
But I have no items to remove from the piles on my bed. This time around, all of my clothes fit my chosen colour palette. (I've really been able to refine my wardrobe over the last 5 years since using the capsule wardrobe system.)
Step 4 – Select the pieces for your capsule
So from the piles on my bed, I’m now going to select the pieces I want to include in my autumn capsule.
In my case, this worked out to be:
- 10 tops
- 5 jumpers
- 2 cardigans
- 1 jacket
- 2 skirts
- 4 trousers
- 4 dresses
- 3 scarfs
Step 5 – Play around a bit
I’ve played around a bit and swapped a couple of pieces in and out.
I'm now happy with all of the pieces that I've selected.
And here is my Autumn 2019 capsule wardrobe:
As you can see, there's not a lot of colour, nor print! It's a very monochrome wardrobe.
You'll also notice that, where I find an item that I really like, I will buy it in a couple of colours - whether that's white and black or navy blue and black.
That being so, hopefully you can see that it is a very cohesive wardrobe. And one from which I can make lots of outfits.

Step 6 – Hang your capsule in your wardrobe
Now, I can hang my capsule in my wardrobe:

It looks so much neater than when I started this process (you can see the before photo here).
Next week
Next week, I will be writing about how to wear (all of the items) your capsule wardrobe throughout the season. So make sure you come back then for Part 4 of this ‘How to’ series.
