Today, I am going to talk about how to gather inspiration for your autumn capsule wardrobe.
Being still August, it probably seems too early to be thinking about your autumn wardrobe. Yet, as the early mornings start to feel fresher, we are gently being reminded that autumn is just around the corner.
When we get to this point, there are a couple of things which I always like to do in preparation for creating my next capsule wardrobe. Today, I would like to share them with you so that you too can get ready for transitioning your wardrobe from summer to autumn
Before we get going though, it's time for Today's Question which is: what do you love most about autumn and why? Leave your comments below. I'd love to read them.
Planning your next capsule wardrobe
As I mentioned above, there are two steps which I like to take before I even go to my wardrobe, take out all of my summer clothes and start to put together my autumn capsule. They are very much preparatory steps, which I like to start two to four weeks before the next season begins.
Step #1 - Create an autumn mood board
The first step I like to take is to create an autumn mood board. I usually use Pinterest to do this, or you can do it the old-fashioned way and cut out images from magazines and glue/pin them to a piece of paper or board. Either way, I recommend doing the exercise quite quickly and without thinking too much about it. The beauty is in seeing what you create!
While you can include fashion images, I really recommend a broad approach at this stage of the process and pinning any image which inspires you for the coming season ahead.
I started my autum Pinterest board a couple of weeks ago and it already has some 70 images. I've quickly come to see that all of the images that I've pinned are really cliched (think lots of orange leaves, pumpkins and chesnuts). I think that's probably because autumn is the season I feel least inspired by (possibly because it's the opposite of spring, which is easily my favourite season).
Looking at the board I've created for autumn, it actually feels quite alien to me. I'm definitley not an 'orange' person - in fact, I don't think I own anything at all which is orange! Sometimes though, a board can be a first edit, which we tweak later on. So we will have to wait and see how this board develops over the coming few weeks and months.

Step #2 - Create an Autumn outfit inspiration board
After creating a mood board, the next step is to create another board full of outfit ideas for autumn. You can pin any images which show the colours, style, fashion trends or clothing pieces you are drawn towards for this autumn season.
In compiling my own board, I've once again really surprised myself. I'm usually not shy of colour but this board is is full of grey, white, navy, black and camel outfits. (That may be because, as I mentioned above, autumn for me is probably the least inspirational of all of the seasons.)
Rather than colour, I can see that I've honed in on the layering, styling and cut of pieces. It's also clear that my autumn uniform is going to be (in a sophisticated, French chic sort of way): crewneck jumper + button down shirt + trousers. Fortunately, I have lots of those pieces already in my wardrobe and so I don't have to go out and buy anything new.
