Today, I will take you through the 5 staples, that I believe are worth "investing" in for your capsule wardrobe.

Capsule wardrobes, for me at least, are all about saving time, energy and money. They help your life to function with ease and grace. Whatever the weather, season or occasion, a good capsule wardrobe will mean that you always have an outfit to wear.

That being so, which are the pieces that  it is worth spending a little bit more on, so that they will see you through season after season and last in your wardrobe year after year.  Today, I will take you through the 5 wardrobe items, which I believe are really worth "investing" in.

#1. Blazer

A good black or white blazer will see you through the very many of life's occasions - from the office and family events to date night and drinks with friends at the weekend.

To make sure that a blazer will last years in your wardrobe, I would pick a classic cut, rather than something too trendy.

I would also make sure that the fit is perfect.  You need to ask yourself:

  • Do the shoulders fit?

  • Do the sleeves end at the most flattering point of your wrists?

  • Is there room to layer underneath?

  • Does it hit your waist/hip at the most flattering point?

  • What type of collar suits you best - wide, narrow or collarless?

If your budget stretches, it is worth getting a piece like this tailored so that it looks as though it was made just for you.

You may wish to go for something extremely smart and structured. My own personal preference however is always to choose something which is comfortable.  I have learnt over time that the pieces I reach for the most in my wardrobe are the ones that I can wear all day and feel absolutely comfortable in. So, when it comes to blazers, I prefer those made from jersey or tweed and which you can move easily in.  My favourite picks for this season are below.

#2. Nude heels

Yes these are very à la Duchess of Cambridge. But she has it absolutely spot on. They are perfect for every special occasion.

Case in point - a few years ago, I bought a classic pair of nude heels. Fortunately, they were on sale because they still are the most expensive pair of shoes I have ever bought!

I have however got my cost per wear from them.  I have worn them to every single one of my friends' weddings and, one day, I hope to wear them to my own wedding!  I love the fact that this one pair of shoes will link all those memories.

So I highly recommend purchasing a pair of nude heels, which you will be able wear to every special occasion that you attend over the years. Being nude, they will pair effortlessly with every single outfit and always look effortessly chic and stylish.

If comfort is your priority, I suggest a nude pair of wedges or even a neutral ballet flat. Either way, you will get so much wear out of them!  See the options included below.

#3. Classic smart dress

Each season, you need at least one classic, smart dress in your wardrobe. This is the dress, which when you don't know what to wear, you can pull it out and dress it up or down depending on the occasion. You can add heels and some stunning jewellery for a more dressy look, or you can add trainers and a denim / leather jacket for a more casual every-day look.

So how do you pick these out from all of the dresses on the rails? Here are my top tips:

  • Pick a dress with a monochrome (or extremely neutral) colour palette.

  • Choose a classic and timeless style.

  • Select a modest cut, which is not too short and will not expose too much skin.

  • Make sure that it is comfortable to wear - all day and night, if you need.

  • Pick the style which suits your body type the best.

If you stick to these pointers, you will be pick a dress which you will be able to wear so many ways and it will always be time, energy and money well spent. Some of my top picks for this summer season are below.

#4. Tote bag

Every woman's wardrobe needs a good tote bag.  Given how much I use mine, it's well worth investing in a good quality one.

You can use them as a work bag, a gym bag, a travel bag, a beach bag, an every-day bag - the list is honestly endless!

You may like to opt for a leather one, which as leather ages will look better and better over time, or something like a Longchamp tote that you can pack flat and easily fit in your suitcase.

There are so many options that it is well worth thinking about what you need it for and which one is going suit your lifstyle best. And once you have one and see how versatile it is, you are probably going to want to add another one to your wardrobe. I've included my top classic picks below.

#5. Trench coat

You will get so much wear out of a classic trench coat. They somehow look both smart and casual at the same time, which means that you will be able to pair them with any outfit that you are wearing.

They are perfect in both spring or autumn time or on a rainy summer's day. I find them to be such a versatile piece that I now have three in my wardrobe (beige + black + rust) and I get a lot of use out of them.

Trenchcoats are incredibly versatile, hardwearing and protect your outfit underneath from the hazards of daily life, from spilling coffee while you are on the move, from rubbing up against something dirty as you wait for the bus to sitting on something nasty which leaves a mark. Again, they are well worth the money. Plus, invesitng in the right outer pieces will extend the versatility and longevity of the other pieces in your wardrobe.   A few options below for you.

I hope this helps you to make better decisions as to where spend the money for your wardrobe.
