Last week, I wrote about how to gather inspiration for your autumn capsule wardrobe. (you can read that blog post here). Today, I would like to share with you my top 5 fashion trends for autumn 2019.
When building a capsule wardrobe, I recommend including only one or two more trendy pieces. Fashions come and go and, while we all want to look current, in my view, there is little point overly investing in pieces which are likely to go quickly out of fashion.
I've been doing some research into the trends for autumn 2019 and today I want to share with you my top 5. These are the ones which I believe will be easiest for you to incorporate into your capsule wardobe this autumn so that you can add those one or two more trendy pieces.

#1 - Dark florals
While florals are in vogue every spring, this autumn season we are seeing lots of dark and moody floral dresses. It also seems to follow-on from summer's prairie dress trend and I absolutely love them! They seem to sum up exactly how I feel about autumn and somehow that (the dark moodiness) makes me feel better. I have a couple in my wardrobe already and am looking forward to wearing them to the max from September to November, pairing with tights and ankle boots and wearing under denim jackets and trench coats.
#2 - Victorian collars
Every spring and summer, we also see the white blouse come around. This is a take on that, with the trend this season being for Victorian collars. I think this is absolutely perfect for the autumn time, particularly as we start to wear jumpers again. Layer a pretty blouse with a Victorian collar under your favourite jumper and I think you are going to look very stylish this autumn season.
#3 - Capes
We've seen a lot of cape dresses recently (think Megan Markle) and now the trend seems to be hitting outerwear. To me, a good cape is an extremely useful item, especially when it's not quite cold enough to wear a full winter coat but you still need to pop out and about. I've included my best picks below, although they don't seem to have fully hit the shops yet so hopefully we will see a few more on the high street as we move into the autumn.
#4 - Cinched suiting
Colourful tailoring was very much the thing this summer and suiting hasn't gone away for autumn. This time around we are seeing cinched suiting - cinched by a belt that it is. I'm not suggesting necessarily that we all need to go out and buy a suit (although if that's your thing, then go for it!). I think the takeaway for your wardrobe this autumn is to cinch your jackets, blazers and coats with a good leather belt. This will quickly and easily update your favourite looks from last year and show that you are exactly on trend. Now really is the time to invest in a good leather belt!
#5 - Satin
Its already clear that we are going through a '90s revival and satin is back. I think this one is absolutely perfect for evening wear (I mean dinner and drinks, not ball gowns!), as well as bringing a little bit of sophistication to the office. Pick either autumnal jewel tones or muted hues. There are some really beautiful pieces out there! And if you already have a satin midi skirt from last year, now is the time to rock it.
So those are my top 5 trends for autumn. I hope that you found something which you liked!
