As spring arrives, today I am going to take you through the top 5 fashion trends you need to know about for the new season.

Last week, I wrote about ‘5 steps to plan your Spring Capsule Wardrobe’. You can read that blog post here.

Step #3 was to ‘incorporate trends’.  This is important. We all want to look à la mode. But, if you are creating a capsule wardrobe, I would suggest including only one or two trendy pieces.

While fashion is trends-led, trends come and go – really very, very quickly. So, if you fill your wardrobe with lots of fast-fashion, trend-led pieces, you will be buying new items a lot more often.

Whereas a capsule wardrobe should be principally made up of key, basic pieces.  This allows you to make multiple outfits, with pieces that last year after year. If you add one or two trendy pieces to each seaonal capsule , you will look and feel up-to-date.

To help you with this, I’ve chosen my top 5 trends for Spring 2019. These are the ones that I think will be easiest to incorporate into a capsule wardrobe, either because you probably own similar pieces already or because they work so well with basic, neutral pieces which form the foundation of your capsule wardrobe. For each trend, I’ve included some links to my favourite picks in case you would like to shop for anything new.

1. Neutrals

I’m excited about this one. In my book, neutrals always look stylish and chic. Plus, you probably already have a lot of neutral pieces in your wardrobe, especially if you borrow from other seasons (i.e. summer and autumn) and layer them to make sure that you warm enough while we wait for the temperatures to warm up.

2. Sage green

I really, REALLY love this one. It seems the perfect colour for Spring, mirroring the natural world.

I have a handful of sage green pieces (namely jumper + skirt + dress), which have been in my wardrobe for years. I love the softness of the colour, without it being a full pastel hue. It also pairs perfectly with the other colours I tend to wear: navy and black (in the colder months) and cream and gold (once it gets a little warmer).

3. Utility

While boiler suits are suddenly all the rage, we are also seeing the utility trend in dresses, skirts and jackets. The fabric used tends to be linen, which while it creases, is comfortable to wear and always look stylish. The reason why I particularly like this trend – and the name really says it all – is that these pieces are incredibly useful, practical and comfortable for wearing day-to-day.

4. Prairie dresses

We see florals every spring and I really like this year’s take, which is the prairie dress. What is a prairie dress you might ask? Well, imagine a full-sleeved maxi dresses in a small floral print with a tired skirt and ruffles at the collar and wrists. That’s a prairie dress! It comes from 19th century America. You’ll be able to dress it up with heels and a clutch or down by adding white trainers or cowboy boots.

5. Pearls & shells

In my world, pearls are timeless and a staple in my wardrobe. I’m particularly in love with the beautiful baroque pearls, which are en vogue right now. You also can’t go wrong by incorporating other elements from the natural world, such as shells, into your outfits. For both pearls and shells, I would concentrate on accessories.  It is a trend you can have fun with this spring, and if you do end up investing in one or two special pieces, being so classic, they will last you for years to come.

I hope that helps you in deciding which trends to add to your spring capsule wardrobe!
